Project Overview

The project was composed of four (4) components:

  1. A study of current education, employment and training, social security and taxation, criminal, civil and family legislation;
  2. Development of recommendations for gender mainstreaming of Maltese legislation to promote equality in all spheres and activities;
  3. Provision of training sessions for legislators and individuals/entities that provide legal services (especially legal drafting);
  4. Provision of training sessions for human resource managers in both public and private sectors on the principle of gender mainstreaming and relevant EU and Maltese legislation.

Objectives:

  • To embed the principle of gender mainstreaming in the selected Codes and Acts of Maltese  Legislation (Ch9, Ch12, Ch13, Ch16, Ch94, Ch123, Ch125, Ch158, Ch261, Ch262, Ch318, Ch327, Ch343, Ch360 Ch372, Ch382, Ch386, Ch424, Ch452, Ch464, and Ch465);
  • To align Maltese legislation with the principles laid down in the EU Directives (75/117/EEC, 76/207/EEC, 79/7/EEC, 86/378/EEC, 86/613/EEC, 96/34/EC, 92/85/EC, 97/81/EC, 96/97/EC, 97/80/EC, 2002/73/EC, 2004/113/EC);
  • To further the development of gender mainstreaming at a national level;
  • To lay the foundations for an increase in female participation in society in general, particularly in the labour market;
  • To sensitise legislators, providers of legal services and human resource managers to the principles of gender equality and gender mainstreaming.

The project produced three toolkits specifically for legislators and providers of legal services; and human resource managers working both in the public and private sector.
